He shops with her for seafood and is, from childhood, a connoisseur of seafood who tin find the best quality past smell and taste. However, a mob attacks and firebombs the restaurant over an election dispute. Abbu Kadam (Om Puri) and his family evacuate the guests, but the mother dies in the fire. Seeking asylum in Europe, the family showtime settles in London, where their residence proves ill-suited for a eatery. They depart for mainland Europe.

Shortly subsequently entering France, the brakes on Abbu'south van fail nearly Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the Midi-Pyrénées. Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), a sous chef at an upscale French restaurant named "Le Saule Pleureur" ("The Weeping Willow"), passes by and offers to help the Kadams find an auto repair shop and a invitee business firm. She brings the Kadams to her apartment and treats them to cold food but no pork, even though pork is a French effeminateness. Abbu is amazed at the quality of the food in the village and its availability and learns that Marguerite made the food herself.

On the way to the car repair store, Abbu sees an abandoned eatery building available for purchase. It is located directly across the street — only a hundred anxiety (thirty m) — from Le Saule Pleureur. While Abbu and Hassan are visiting the property, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), proprietor of Le Saule Pleureur and purporting to act every bit caretaker for the owners of the abandoned restaurant, asks the Kadams to get out because it is "individual belongings". Abbu sits with his family unit at a French eating house drinking only water and not touching booze. Abbu buys the holding, even though the rest of his family is against it, and names the restaurant "Maison Bombay".

Mallory visits while the Kadams are preparing for their eating house opening. Since she claims she won't be able to attend, Hassan offers their menu every bit an olive branch. Yet, by the day of their opening night, the Kadams learn she has bought all the locally bachelor ingredients they need. A cold war erupts betwixt Abbu and Mallory. The war peaks on Bastille Day when ane of Mallory's chefs, Jean-Pierre, and ii others vandalize the Kadams' restaurant by spray-painting words which translate to "France for the French" on the outer wall and firebombing the interior. Hassan catches the arsonists in the act and scares them off, but his hands are burned. The following morning Mallory, who deduced who is responsible for the arson and vandalism, dismisses Jean-Pierre and personally cleans the graffiti from Maison Mumbai. While she's cleaning, Hassan approaches her and offers to cook an omelette for her, if she'll help since his hands are heavily bandaged.

Hassan was told past Marguerite that Mallory interviews potential chefs by tasting their omelettes and deciding whether the person is indeed a keen chef. Mallory and Hassan set to piece of work, with him clearly in charge of the cook. She too confesses she recognized his skills with his before amends on behalf of his male parent, when he recreated a archetype pigeon dish. Abbu is initially against the move, only ultimately strikes a deal with her as to Hassan's pay.

Hassan's cooking, which gradually evolves into a fusion of Indian cuisine and French cuisine, results in Mallory'due south restaurant receiving its second Michelin star. The honour draws national attention to Hassan'south cooking, and he is offered and accepts a task in Paris. Hassan returns home and reunites with Marguerite. He invites her to join him in a business venture and asks her to then join him in cooking a dish from his long-ago past. That evening, later on Hassan and Marguerite set up dinner in Mallory'due south kitchen, Mallory has invited the Kadams and local guests to dinner.
